Day 7: Victoria to Charlottetown (65.4 km) – Mission Accomplished!

We left Charlottetown at 7:30 this morning to retrace our steps to Victoria by the Sea.  We were on our bikes rolling by 8:30.  Remnants of the post-tropical storm Andrea were still affecting PEI weather today, keeping the temperature cool (9 degrees) and the winds high (30 km/hr with gusts to 50 km/hr).  They were blowing from the northwest today, which favoured us for some of the ride and hampered progress in other areas.

As I was cycling along this morning, it occurred to me that our route today was 65 km. This number has little significance to most unless you are familiar with Cystic Fibrosis.  Many young children are not able to pronounce “Cystic Fibrosis” so instead say something that sounds like “65 roses”, hence the significance of the number “65”.  There is also a documentary that followed the life of Eva Markvoort, a young woman from BC, who sadly lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 25 in 2010.  You can find out more about it at: http://www.cfvancouver.ca/home/shop/65-red-roses-dvd/

The rain held off this morning as we followed the last leg of our perimeter ride around Prince Edward Island.  This segment had rolling hills, showcasing beautiful homes and cottages along PEI’s south shore.  We arrived in Charlottetown around 11 a.m.  Cameron and Claire, my two children both of whom have Cystic Fibrosis, joined us for the last few kilometres.

We arrived at the cannons in Victoria Park about 11:30, stopped long enough for the celebratory photos, and then pedalled downtown to enjoy a well-deserved brunch.
